What You Need to Know
The Application
Spousal sponsorship applications allow a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to sponsor their spouse or common-law partner to immigrate to Canada permanently. To qualify, the relationship must be genuine — and the application must clearly demonstrate that.
Documents You Need
To support your application, you’ll need to provide proof of your relationship’s authenticity, as well as documentation showing that the sponsor can meet the basic needs of the person being sponsored. HR Immigration ensures everything is complete, accurate, and aligned with current requirements.
Types of Applications
Outland Spousal Sponsorship
Processed through the visa office in the spouse’s country of citizenship or legal residence (outside Canada), Outland applications may also be used if the couple resides together in Canada. This route allows for the right to appeal if refused.
Inland Spousal Sponsorship
This option is for couples living together in Canada, where the sponsored partner holds valid temporary status (as a visitor, student, or worker). Inland applicants may also be eligible for an Open Work Permit, allowing them to work while their sponsorship application is being processed.
Who Can You Sponsor?
You may sponsor the following individuals — along with their dependent children under the age of 22:
Spouse — legally married partner
Common-law Partner — a partner you’ve lived with for at least 12 continuous months
Conjugal Partner — a partner you’ve been in a marriage-like relationship with for at least one year but are unable to live with due to exceptional circumstances (Note: work, school, or visa challenges do not qualify as valid reasons on their own.)
